This is usually the first question that comes to mind when we have any health issue: is there any drug to treat it? What can I take? Is there any solution for premature ejaculation?

Regarding our current subject, premature ejaculation, there was no drug available until recently. However, it is no magic potion and we will tell you why.

Nowadays, there is a medication used to treat premature ejaculation, which has proven its effectiveness. For the time being, there is only one drug, whose active ingredient is the dapoxetine. It is available only under prescription.

Therefore, it is advisable to first visit a specialist who can perform a complete diagnosis adapted to the needs of each patient and who decides whether this medication is necessary or not.

What is exactly dapoxetine and how does it work to prevent premature ejaculation?

Priligy-EPDapoxetine (currently available under the trademark name Priligy) belongs to the SSRIs family (Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors), commonly known as “antidepressants”. The advantage of this drug is that, unlike conventional antidepressants, it does not need a run-up period to work: you just have to take one pill between one and three hours before sexual intercourse, and it will have an almost immediate effect.

Its mechanism of action is quite simple: an enzyme called serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter, is responsible for inhibiting anger, aggression, sleep and sexual desire, among other factors related to depression. The higher the serotonin level, the more likely that premature ejaculation will occur. The dapoxetine temporarily blocks the serotonin level in order to delay the ejaculation. This also postpones the moment of orgasm.

The discovery of this medication was accidental: several experts noticed that male patients who were taking antidepressants experienced a delay in their ejaculation moment. That is why they decided to adapt the dapoxetine dose so as to focus on the premature ejaculation treatment. This drug is quickly eliminated by the body and the possible side effects are minor and short-lasting (around 24 hours).

Taking this medication will be enough?

The effects of this drug are not permanent. It can be useful in the first part of the premature ejaculation treatment, but the real aim is to learn to control ejaculation without any pharmacological dependency. Thus, you will be able to accomplish a satisfactory sexual relationship.

For this reason, from the Rosselló Medical Institute we are firm supporters of sexological counselling with experts in order to definitely overcome premature ejaculation.

If you choose to take these pills, it is essential to combine them with sexual therapy. The aim is to develop the skill to detect the pre-orgasmic sensations in order to be able to control the ejaculatory reflex and stop depending on the medication in the long term. A key factor in this process is that the patient must “pull out all the stops” in order to make the treatment work. After all, this is a teamwork between the specialist, the patient and his partner –if he has one during treatment.

We currently offer the possibility to access the ejaculation control program online.
