Phimosis or short frenulum

WHAT IS SHORT FRENULUM?

The frenulum is a small fold of preputial mucosa that connects the glans to the foreskin (skin covering the glans in uncircumcised patients), on its front. When it is too short, retracting the prepuce may cause pain. Moreover, there is a risk of rupture of the frenulum during intercourse, which could lead to bleeding.

What is frenulectomy or frenuloplasty?

The condition of short frenulum, can be surgically treated with a frenuloplasty (reconstructive plastic surgery), a frenectomy (complete removal), or circumcision. In the first exploratory visit the urologist will recommend the most appropriate technique to recover perfect functionality and also preserve an aesthetic appearance, which is satisfactory for the patient. Any of the three techniques are performed under local anesthesia and the surgical stitches are reabsorbed to facilitate post-operative patient recovery.

What results can be expected?

The section of the frenulum allows easy exposure of the glans. The patient will experience no discomfort during sexual relations and resume normal urination. The post-operative period consists of monitoring that the healing and scarring process follows its due course and sexual intercourse can be resumed approximately after the fifth week.
