How to solve 4 common male sexual problems

Fortunately, speaking of sex has become less of a taboo and more accessible to everyone. Although practically no man will acknowledge suffering a sexual problem more than 10% of them suffer sexual problems at some point in their lives. As with any other health issue, the logical thing is to seek professional help. In this post we will go over four of the most common male sexual problems, their causes and how to solve them.

Erectile dysfunction or impotence

Total or partial erectile dysfunction, better known as impotence is, perhaps, the most feared problem by men. It occurs when they fail to have a sufficiently rigid erection for sexual intercourse in more than 40% of the attempts and when the problem continues during several months.

This dysfunction is commonly associated to a great deal of stress and anxiety could eventually impair the patient’s self-esteem and relationships if left untreated.

What causes erectile dysfunction? The causes can be organic (for example diabetes, hypertension, obesity or cholesterolemia), psychological (stress, marital problems, fear of failure, sexual traumas, etc.) or a mixture of the previous two.

In addition, it is very common to lose the erection after prostate surgeries. These cases are very common in our medical practice which is why it is essential to diagnose the origin of the dysfunction in order to know why the mechanism of erection fails and find the best solution.

How can impotence be cured? The diagnosis will point towards different treatment options: pharmacological, hormonal treatment, vacuum devices, injections of vasoactive substances, psycho-sexological treatment or, in more severe cases, the surgical approach.

Premature ejaculation

This is another of the most common pathologies treated in our clinics. It affects more people than you would imagine and the good news is that, when treated by an expert in the field, it is easily resolved. In this case, it is a disorder that occurs in the orgasm phase that causes premature and involuntary ejaculation.

Why does it happen? It may be caused due to organic reasons, such as uro-genital affections of the urethra and prostate, neurological alterations, hormonal imbalances, vascular alterations or as a side effect of taking some drugs. The vast majority of cases are based on psychological reasons.

Are there solutions? Depending on the cause of this pathology, a sexual psychotherapy approach may be chosen to learn to detect and control the ejaculatory reflex. In other cases it will be necessary to follow some specific exercises to learn to control the ejaculation. Some cases require the use of specific prescription drugs during the first phase.

In exceptional cases, the expert may recommend the surgical option for those who have hypersensitivity in the glans. The most common approach in our clinics is to follow a specific program that combines the initial use of prescription medication that produce a delay in the ejaculatory reflex together with a psychotherapy process (with or without involving a partner) as well as learning specific techniques and exercises.

Venous leak

This pathology is a specific type of erectile dysfunction caused by a lack of adequate blood supply to the penis. The erection is achieved, but it is typically lost abruptly without reaching orgasm.

Why does it happen? Because the blood of the corpora cavernosa cannot be retained due to failures in the veno-occlusive mechanism of the penis. Blood flow evacuates the penis before the man is able to reach orgasm, making it flaccid and unprepared for sexual intercourse. This blood loss causes a problem of erectile dysfunction that can be partial or total, in the most severe cases.

How can venous leak be cured? In this case, given the poor efficacy of pharmacological treatments to correct the problems of erectile dysfunction due to a venous leakage, the only option to restore erection in the long term is to opt for the surgical approach.

With few exceptions, we do not recommend intracavernous injections of vasoactive substances (also called injections for the penis or injections to get an erection) because of the side effects they cause and because of the uncomfortable administration of this type of treatment.

Lack of desire or anaphrodisia

This pathology consists of a persistent or diffuse lack of sexual desire. Men who suffer from it do not have the desire to have intimate encounters and/or sexual intercourse. Although it is more prevalent in women, the lack of desire in men is not uncommon and it also causes discomfort and frustration. The patient can avoid any kind of sexual contact, to the point of experiencing a total absence of erotic or sexual fantasies.

Why does it happen? It can be caused by physical or psychological causes. Physical causes usually respond to a low level of testosterone. Among the psychological causes we can find marital problems, stress, anxiety, depression and unresolved erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation, among others.

Are there solutions? If the cause is physical, an expert in andrology should prescribe a treatment that consists of a hormonal supplementation to recover adequate levels. If the elements that provoke the pathology are psychological, it is necessary to go to an expert in sexual medicine or psychology.
